The European Commission has proposed to invest €695.1 million in 49 key projects to develop sustainable and innovative transport infrastructure in Europe across all transport modes. Selected projects will provide infrastructure enabling greater use of alternative fuels and electric cars, modernise Europe's air traffic management, and further develop waterborne and rail transport.

Two 30-metre tall Rotor Sails have been installed onboard the product tanker vessel Maersk Pelican targeting a reduction in fuel cost and associated emissions on typical global shipping routes of 7-10%.

The next-generation bulk carrier Haaga has today been delivered to ESL Shipping from Jinling Shipyard in Nanjing, China. ESL Shipping is part of the Aspo Group. The 160-meter, 25,600 dwt, LNG-fueled vessel generates less than 50% of the carbon dioxide emissions of the previous generation of vessels. The vessel can also be fueled by completely carbon-free biogas, once the availability of carbon-free biogas improves over time.

Yara and Kalmar have entered into an agreement in which the leading cargo handling supplier Kalmar will deliver autonomous equipment, software and services for a unique, fully digitalized container handling solution at the Porsgrunn quayside in Norway. This means that all the necessary operations related to the world's first autonomous and electric container vessel Yara Birkeland will be conducted in a fully autonomous and cost efficient manner, with zero emissions.

On 1st August 2018 Remontowa Shipbuilding, a member of the Remontowa Holding capital group, signed a contract for the construction of two Double Ended Diesel Electric Hybrid ferries for Norled (yard nos. B619/3-4).

The technology group Wärtsilä has successfully carried out testing of its innovative autodocking technology. The tests were carried out with the ‘Folgefonn’, an 83-metre long ferry owned by leading Norwegian operator Norled. The vessel has hybrid propulsion and is already fitted with a Wärtsilä wireless charging system. The installation of autodocking on a ferry is a world first.
