Klaipėda will once again invite to create advanced solutions for the ports of today and the future. The hackathon “Portathon Baltic 2020” organised for the second time will bring together the teams of companies, innovators and start-ups from Lithuania and abroad. The event will take place on the 25th-27th of September in virtual platform as well, providing opportunity for an even larger group of enthusiasts to participate.

Demo boats workshops and International e-mobility Conference took place in early June at the Klaipeda University Marine Research Institute organized by ELMAR project. On the first day the e-mobility conference featured 7 presentations on new boats building and each of these was followed by a lively discussions. The next day was dedicated to retrofitting of existing wooden or 'classic boats' and building traditional wooden boats. The International Electrotechnical Commission, IEC, has approved a new work item SECOM – Secure Exchange and COMmunication of S-100 based products. What does it mean in practice? SECOM will mean interoperability, since the goal is to standardize how data is exchanged. SECOM aims to support all S-100 products that define what data is exchanged, making it a cornerstone for exchange of maritime information.

Motus Foundation was present at the kick-off seminar of the CEF, MoS project “Cargo capacity upgrade and LNG bunkering Świnoujście – Ystad maritime link”. The seminar was held on 25th January in Ystad, Sweden and was moderated by Mr. Emil Arolski, Chairman of the Polish LNG Platform. Over 60 participants attended the event along with the project consortium, including the Port of Ystad, Gaz-System S.A. and Polferries S.A. Key note speech by Swedish regional and governmental representatives as well as European officials underlined the critical importance of the maritime link project.

On December 11th, 2018, the world’s largest LNG bunker supply vessel “Kairos” has started operations in Northwest Europe. Chartered by Blue LNG, a joint venture of the Hamburg based leading LNG supplier “Nauticor” with a 90% share and the Lithuanian energy infrastructure provider KN with a 10% share, the ship was handed over by the owner Babcock Schulte Energy in the port of Klaipeda.

The world’s first intelligent very large ore carrier (iVLOC), the DNV GL-classed Pacific Vision, was delivered by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipyard to China Merchants Energy Shipping Company. The vessel is the world’s first VLOC to implement DNV GL’s SmartShip descriptive notation. To qualify for the notation, Pacific Vision has been outfitted with an integration platform, a smart navigation decision support system, a ship energy efficiency management and optimization system, and smart-vessel operation and maintenance system.

The new bulk carriers Viikki and Haaga have started operating on the Baltic Sea. The 25,600-dwt vessels, 160 metres long and fuelled by liquefied natural gas, produces less than half of the carbon dioxide of previous vessel generation, thanks to LNG and many advanced technologies.

As a central part of Stena Line’s efforts to reduce fuel consumption and minimise environmental impact, the company is now running a pilot study using artificial intelligence technology on board vessels.
